Cycling for charity in memory of much-missed best friend

St Teresa's Hospice

A HAIRDRESSER is preparing for a fundraising bike ride in memory of her best friend.

Marie Hawkeswood, of Richmond, North Yorkshire, will cycle 550 miles from the Thai capital Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, in Vietnam.

Mrs Hawkeswood, 38, hopes to raise £3,000 for St Teresa’s Hospice, in Darlington, in memory of her best friend and business partner Tracey Willis, who died of cancer in 2012, aged 43.

She will be accompanied on the 15-day ride by husband and wife Michelle and Keith Robertson, who live in Kent.

Mrs Hawkeswood, who runs Hackers barber’s shop, in Darlington, said: "Me, Tracey and Michelle used to work together more than 20 years ago".

"When Michelle moved away, we stayed in touch and Tracey and I set up the hairdressing business in Darlington".

"I have wanted to do something in memory of Tracey and this ride is also in memory of my uncle."

The trio fly out to Thailand later this month.

Mrs Hawkeswood added: “I am ready and excited for the challenge. I’ve done quite a lot of work for it and I am bored of sitting on my exercise bike in the dining room.

"I am looking forward to seeing some scenery."

Bangkok to Saigon

bankok_to_saigon_cycle_challenge

Some friends and I are cycling from Bangkok to Saigon in memory of Tracey. She loved cycling and visiting different countries so our plan is to do this for her and raise some money for a charity that was very close to her heart. We plan to cycle 808km from Bangkok to Saigon in aide of St. Teresa's.

Tracey would visit the day centre St. Teresa's on a Tuesday where she could have lunch and could have treatments such as messages and acupuncture. They do a lot of great work both physically and mentally and are very much an integral part of many peoples lives. A lot of people don't realise that only 30% of funding comes from Government. St Teresa's Hospice is an independent charity which costs approximately £1.5 million per annum to provide the professional services they offer. This leaves a shortfall of over £1 million a year...or almost £19,231 per week. This money must be raised to enable St. Teresa's to continue to provide its vital services to people in the community at times of great need.

Please help us say a great big thank you by giving as much back as possible. I'm sure you'll agree it truly is an amazing cause.

Saturday's alright for trimming

Queue

Contrary to what you may think, Saturday does not see a queue from the shop half way down Duke Street. Sure we have some busy Saturdays but on the whole waiting times are not as bad as people think.

Instead of putting off that hair cut for another week, why not come and see us next Saturday? We are open from 9am till 3pm on Saturdays. What are you waiting for?
